Banquet halls in Mississauga and Brampton: what to ask before you book

Before you sign with a Mississauga or Brampton banquet hall, ask about capacity, segregated layouts, catering, decor rules, timing, parking and fees.

Many of the GTA’s banquet halls are in Mississauga and Brampton, and many of them are used to hosting large South Asian and Muslim weddings. That gives you plenty of choice. It also makes it easy to sign a contract before you fully understand what it covers.

Use these questions on every visit. Ask for the answers in writing, and compare halls on the same points. If you are still deciding on an area, our guides to Mississauga and Brampton are a good place to start.

Before you visit

Know a few things first, so each hall can give you a real answer rather than a brochure.

  • Which events you want to hold there, and the guest count for each.
  • Your preferred dates, plus one or two alternatives.
  • Which events will be segregated, and how.
  • A rough budget for the venue and catering. Our budget planner can help you set one.

Dates and availability

  • Is the date held, or booked? What turns a hold into a booking, and by when?
  • How many other events are in the building that day? Ask how lobbies, parking and noise are shared.
  • Are Fridays, Sundays or winter dates priced differently?
  • What happens if you need to move the date?
  • Is the room booked early the next morning? An event the following day can shorten your teardown.

Capacity and layout

The capacity on the brochure is rarely the number that fits your wedding.

  • How many guests fit with round tables, a stage, a dance floor and food stations all in the room?
  • Are there pillars or low ceilings that block the view of the stage?
  • Is there a bridal room where the bride can get ready, rest or sit for her nikah?
  • Where does the baraat enter, and is a dhol allowed indoors?

Segregated setups

  • Are there two rooms side by side, and are they the same size and standard?
  • Can a partition be installed in a single hall? Who supplies it, and how tall can it be?
  • Does each side have its own entrance and its own washrooms?
  • Can sound and video be shared between rooms?
  • Is there a quiet room where men and women can pray, with access to wudu?

Catering and food

Many halls require you to use their own kitchen. Others allow outside caterers, sometimes for a fee. Find out which before you fall for a menu.

  • Is catering in-house only? If outside caterers are allowed, are there extra charges?
  • If the hall describes its kitchen as halal, ask how: who certifies it, where the meat comes from, and whether the same kitchen prepares food that isn’t halal for other events.
  • Is alcohol served at other events in the building, and can your event be fully dry?
  • Is a tasting included, and when does it happen?
  • What does the per-plate price include? Ask about appetizers, chai and dessert, late-night snacks, children’s meals, meals for your vendors and any cake-cutting fee.
  • How will food be served, plated, family style or buffet, and how many servers will there be?

Decor and setup

Your decorator can only work within the hall’s rules, so find them out before any design is drawn up.

  • When can your decorator get into the room, and when must everything be cleared?
  • Are outside decorators allowed, or does the hall have a list you must use?
  • What comes with the room: tables, chairs, linens, chair covers, centrepieces, a stage?
  • What are the rules on candles, haze, cold sparklers, confetti and hanging anything from the ceiling?
  • Can the dance floor be wrapped or decaled?
  • Is there enough power for stage lighting and sound?

Sound and timing

  • Can you bring your own DJ, or must you use the in-house system?
  • Is there a sound limit or a hard finish time?
  • How is overtime charged, and who decides when it starts?
  • What happens if the baraat arrives late? On a busy night, the answer matters.

Parking, access and safety

  • How many parking spaces are there, and is there overflow or valet parking?
  • Is there a coat check for winter weddings?
  • Are there ramps, elevators and accessible washrooms for elders?
  • Does the hall require licensed security for larger events, and can you bring your own?

For the bride and her family

These are easy to forget on a tour, and they matter a great deal on the day.

  • Is the bridal room private, with its own washroom and a full-length mirror?
  • Are there enough outlets for hair tools and a steamer?
  • Is there good light for getting-ready photos?
  • Where can the family keep outfits, gifts and envelopes safely during the event?
  • Is there a quiet space where elders can rest away from the music?

The contract

This is where small details become large costs. Read it slowly, ideally with someone who isn’t emotionally attached to the venue.

  • What deposit is needed, and when is each payment due?
  • Is there a minimum guest count or a minimum spend?
  • Are HST and service charges included in the per-plate price, or added on top?
  • Are there music licensing fees, or an insurance requirement?
  • What is the cancellation policy, and what happens if the hall cancels on you?
  • Is every promise from the tour written into the contract?

Compare halls side by side

After three or four visits, the halls start to blur together. Put every answer into one sheet, with a column per hall. The lowest per-plate price is not always the lowest total once linens, decor access, overtime and service charges are added. Comparing on the same points makes that easy to see.

Visit with the lights on

A hall in daylight, with the chairs stacked, tells you very little. Ask to see the room set for an event, ideally in the evening. Walk the route your guests will take, from the parking lot to their seats. Then walk the route the bride will take, from her room to the stage.

Finding, booking and managing the venue is part of how we plan, so these become our questions to ask rather than yours. Read more about our venue service.
